Available Light – Brisbane City

I’m currently in the middle of attending an 8 week photography course and just completed our first assignment. We were set the task of taking a range of photos starting at approximately one hour before sunset through to 30 minutes to an hour after the sun had set. Our goal was capture the time frame about 10 minutes after the sun had set after the lighting had gone from warm, to cool, to the amazing blue light you will see below, which lasts anywhere from 10-20 minutes depending on how fast the sun is setting

Afterwards, we were to select our favourite 6 photos (for me, it was choosing 6 photos out of 120 images) and showing the tutor/class. In the six, we had to choose one from the start, one from the end then a nice mixture in the middle. Watching the ambient light changing and the shadows on the buildings appearing was a very educational experience. I will upload add a time lapse over the next week with all the photos so you can see how the lights changed.

Black & White

I decided to try my hand at some black and white photography, though I didn’t have a willing model so I tried some self portraits while I was at it. I was aiming to try and get some shadows across the face but given I was out at a public place, I was only able to use the fixed lights on hand. There are a couple of photos that aren’t completely black and white but I do like the minimal amount of colour in them.

Let me know what you think!

Raby Bay Sunset

A few weeks ago I finally took delivery of some neutral density filters that I had recently purchased and decided their first test would be capturing the sun setting over Raby Bay, looking back from Cleveland point.

Ole

Meet Ole. He is (currently) a 19 Month old Australian Kelpie. I rescued him from the wonderful people at the Animal Welfare League in 2010 and we have been mates ever since.

Brisbane Santos Lights

The Brisbane Festival is running from 3-24th September and is Brisbane’s annual cultural event. Every night for the duration of the Brisbane Festival is the Santos City of Lights display that lights up the city and South Bank. With such a spectacle in town, I couldn’t resist heading down to photograph the light and laser display.

I also some how managed to capture the Brisbane ghost (see photo 5)
